We had a busy week and I didn't realize until today that I had only taken one picture. I also usually keep a running summary in a post draft and that didn't happen this week, so you are going to get a short and sweet highlights update this week.
Bible/Memory
- Completed lesson five in Understanding the Faith on God's decrees and their execution.
- Passed 2-3 sections each in Awana Club & practiced our catechism questions.
- Read in the book of Acts about Paul's missionary journeys and the council in Jerusalem.
Math
- Buttercup completed five Saxon math lessons and was thrilled that she made 100% on her test. She also completed the first investigation which she thought was fun but not very instructive. Saxon swears you shouldn't skip them though. Hmmmm.
- DragonFly completed four Abeka math lessons and four Math-U-See lessons. Using Math-U-See to teach concepts that are then reinforced in Abeka is working out wonderfully!
Language Arts
- Both children completed four R&S English lessons. DragonFly worked on memorizing the state-of-being verbs and learned to identify direct objects. Buttercup diagrammed dependent adjective clauses.
- Buttercup started a new unit in IEW but hit a wall which was entirely my fault. I still haven't found time to watch the dvd lesson she is working on. I must make it a priority this weekend.
- DragonFly struggled with spelling but we had a bit of a break though on Wednesday.
History
We took the week off to explore our own interests. Buttercup finished up her research on Napoleon, and DragonFly read more aboutwarguy stuff. I'm so glad I plan these weeks through-out the year. A little unschooled history is perfect in the dead of winter when you don't feel like doing much of anything.
Science
We finished God's Design for the Physical World: Heat and Energy this week. We are 2/3rds of the way through our science for the school year! Our final topic was on light, lenses, refraction, and all that good stuff. I had bought a set of lenses and we enjoyed conducting various science experiments. DragonFly is at the stage where any science experiment would be improved with the addition of explosive material so lens experiments didn't rank super high on his excitement scale. Both children are looking forward to the last book in the God's Design for the Physical World. Inventions here we come!
Reading
- Buttercup picked back up her Abeka Of Places book this week and read an excerpt from Robinson Crusoe and several poems. For free reading she read The Lost Stories (Ranger's Apprentice) by Flanagan and The Queen's Own Fool by Yolan. She reminds me that she also read a huge stack of books on Napoleon, her favorite being Napoleon on the Art of War by Luvaas.
- DragonFly read Knights Castle and Magic or Not? by Edward Eager. Once he discovered that Eager was a fan of Nesbit, he was hooked. We are all Nesbit fans in this house. He is also listening to LibriVox recordings of Tanglewood Tales by Hawthorne and The Tales of Shakespeare by Lamb on his MP3 player.
Today we are off to the library, park day, a birthday party, and Bible study with friends. I hope you all had a wonderful week.
I love the idea of actually scheduling in weeks to explore their own interests! We're big Nesbit and Eager fans also... we're listening to Half Magic on cd right now, and then I think I'll read Magic by the Lake aloud. Looks like you had a good week!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a profitable week. Hope you all have fun out and about today. :)
ReplyDeleteSo inspiring...all of the work that was accomplished. I also keep a running draft throughout the week, so helpful...I'd never get it done otherwise. I will be looking in to some of those books...thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWe are also huge Eager fans which led us to Nesbit. I like your unschooled history week.
ReplyDeleteI am totally going to steal your photo strategy this week! I think it is the only way I will get photos of my kiddos without their hands covering their faces :). Great week as usual Daisy, thanx for sharing.
ReplyDeleteKeeping a running draft helps the final editing not seem so long. However I always still find errors. I love the line about guy stuff. Great week.
ReplyDeleteI love the peek through the door. And what is she doing? Working on her notebook. Love that.
ReplyDeleteUnplanned history weeks sounds like a great idea!
ReplyDeleteI love your one photo of your dd working in her room. Way to go with the 100% on the Saxon math test.
