Fun Way to Practice Skip Counting

We stumbled upon a great way to practice skip counting today. DragonFly was jumping up and down and screaming, "Math is fun! Math is fun!"  DragonFly has had a long and difficult time learning math facts so I'm thrilled to find anything that can help make the process a little less painful. I was pleased to discover his skip counting ability really improved with this activity.

It doesn't get any more simple than this, folks.

You'll need...
One Laundry Basket
12 sandwich or quart-size bags (plastic or reusable cloth)
Socks, cotton balls, basically something soft and in great supply.
We started with two's and used paired socks.

DragonFly's goal was to throw as many paired socks into the basket as he could. He then counted by two's to determine points earned.

After that we moved on to three socks in a bag.

Eventually we worked on numbers high enough that cotton balls in ziploc bags made more sense.

{Shhh, but even Buttercup wanted to get in on the action.}

I can see we'll be repeating this activity on a regular basis.

Of course eventually the entire thing dissolved into a giant paired sock fight. Maybe I should have titled this post...In Which Daisy is Buried in Socks and her Children Dance with Glee.

  2. I love that idea! I'll have to use this with my pre-schooler. She is the only one in our household who enjoys folding socks.
