Buttercup's 8th Grade Wishlist

It is time to start thinking about next year (2012/2013). Before we know it, we'll have an eighth grader. Buttercup is really starting to take charge of her own education. I wish she'd take charge of the pocketbook. Her wishlist is OUCH! High school courses are not cheap. While educating your own children is a great privilege, it definitely doesn't come without a cost. Here's what Buttercup is hoping for next year.

Math - Saxon Algebra I or Algebra 1/2 (depending upon placement) - $90
Language Arts -
Science - Apologia General Science with lab supplies - $140
History - TruthQuest - Age of Revolution I - $30 for guide. I'll need to buy at least four other books (From Sea to Shining Sea, Story of the Thirteen Colonies, Story of the Great Republic, and Trial & Triumph) but hopefully this will total less than $100 and will teach history to both kids. Buttercup will also need some kind of government supplement but I think I can go the inexpensive route with a textbook from Christian Liberty Press.
Bible - Going to just throw together my own stuff and try to spend nothing.
Elective - She really wants to starts German with Rosetta Stone. I'm also hoping I can get a friend of ours from Germany to spend some time weekly just conversing with her. - $150 for Level 1.
Logic/Critical Thinking - No clue but hopefully we'll find something inexpensive.

Hopefully at least some of this will count for high school credit.

So I should tell her to get a job, right?

I haven't shown Sage this yet. His jaw is going to hit the floor.

I suppose the good news is that DragonFly told me he would be perfectly content if I didn't spend a dime on his homeschool curriculum. Haa haa. Nice try, kiddo.

  1. Wow! Both of my kids feel the same way as Dragonfly. :D

  2. I'm sure you can find some of those items used so that should help right?

Keep up the good work and have a wonderful Christmas.

  3. Actually...if she *really* wants to do something that is out of your range, she really *could* try and earn the money. I know I had my first job the summer after 7th grade so that I could pay for a few things on my own...my folks required this of me, actually. I bet a few odd jobs would cover a couple of the higher priced items, and she'd value them even more knowing that she earned them. :)

    Just a thought...

I am dreading when we get to that age. MY wishlist is steep! (I don't even want to SEE theirs. :)

ps. I look forward to hearing what logic text you use. I am still deciding our path for logic. I want to use Martin Cothran's stuff, and Si already owns Peter Kreeft's Socratic Logic, plus we own one of the Bluedorn books and also How to Read a Book...but I have no idea what ORDER all that stuff should go in.

  7. I'm right there with you on the continuation course from IEW, ouch, but it's been so worth it to us. I will be doing the same thing as far as planning, but I'm going to wait a bit after Christmas before making final choices...
